We have a strange relationship with intellect in our society. We view intelligence as something you either have or you don’t, so when we see someone act more intelligent than we feel, we see them as inherently “other”. But “smart isn’t something you are, it is something you get” as one of my professor once said. We can gain more knowledge and we can gain the skills of logical discourse, which are both components of intelligence.
It’s fairly simple, but you can scarcely imagine how offended the special snowflakes in the world get when you tell them they can’t have their special drink. I had a guy from London absolutely flip on me Sunday night because I wouldn’t make him a mojito. There’s a reason for everything, and he got a better drink because of it.
The media often makes jokes about disorders, in particular Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, teasing and taunting people with OCD for being too clean or performing a ritual. The elder brother in Everbody Loves Raymond always touches his food to his chin. I’ve struggled with major depression for nearly half my life. I’ve tried a slew of drugs–SSRI’s, SNRI’s, stimulants, anti-convulsants, atypical anti-psychotics, but nothing has ever worked as well as a tandem bike ride.
I remember in fifth grade getting one of my first interpretive questions on a reading quiz. The question started with the wonderful words “why do you think…?” In my mind at the time, I felt that there was no possible wrong answer. My thoughts were my own and could be anything. Turned out I was wrong. Even though the question asked what I thought, it was just trying to figure out if I thought what the teacher wanted me to think.
The word “hentai” has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary, which means that a casual hazard/goal of being an internet-person has turned into an actual, recognized thing of the English-speaking world, which means that we might as well start talking about it outside of internet-people saloons.
